We are honored to be the keynote speakers at this year's WCIAA conference! The Western Cast Iron Art Alliance conference October 3-7, 2018 in Granite City, Illinois is a biennial event focusing on cast iron. There will be exhibitions like the Flaming Sculpture Walk, the Professional and Student Cast Iron Exhibition, and there are opportunities for performance iron casting.
There will be workshops that focus on the creation of sand molds, ceramic shell, reaction molds, and jewelry-scale cast iron, which we're super excited to try.
There will be tours of an industrial steel mill that casts huge quantities of steel as well as other exciting activities.
Our keynote talk will be on Thursday, October 4 and we'll also have a book signing.
Granite City, IL is just outside of St Louis, MO.
Join Jen Townsend, Renée Zettle-Sterling, and Lin Stanionis for a presentation about the new book, CAST: Art and Objects Made Using Humanity’s Most Transformational Process. Jen and Renée will reveal the process of writing a book of this scope, why casting is important, and how their roots in jewelry and metalsmithing inspired CAST. Then, Lin will speak about her jewelry, her influences, and why casting is a critical part of her process. Book signing to follow.
About the Eighth Annual IAC Gold Conference:
During this era of uncertainty, characterized by a vortex of change, Initiatives in Art and Culture (IAC) explores the underpinnings of gold's abiding emotional power, allure, and enduring value. Taking a wide-ranging look at gold and with a focus on jewelry, IAC considers artistry and techniques; means of purveying adornment in the marketplace; the regulatory climate regarding jewels and the metal itself, and ways of ensuring that this cornerstone of humanity’s definition of the aesthetic is sourced and traded ethically and with an undergirding concern for social and environmental sustainability. IAC's Gold Conference annually brings together representatives from all communities and disciplines to engage in a multi-faceted exploration of the power and meaning of gold.
